Sarang planted the seeds for Dakshina
Preseving Traditional Values & Culture
Our story began within Sarang and out of it Dakshina grew.
Gopalakrishnan and Vijayalakshmi are the founders of Sarang an alternative school where the four of us met, learned and grew alongside each other.
Kannaki and Unniyarcha are the younger children of Gopalakrishnan and Vijayalakshmi
Our early childhood was filled with creativity and exploration.
At the ages of eight and ten, our parents took us to Thrissur to learn kalarippayattu- a martial art specific to Kerala.
It was at this time that the four of us first met and shared our way of educating.
When Vishnujith was twelve and Indulekha was eight, their parents chose to send them to Sarang to join us.
Sarang planted the seeds for Dakshina.
We were given a unique education that nurtured our passions and taught us how to live in our world with consciousness and respect.
The syllabus taught us all the subjects that a person needs to live happily and successfully. We learned a range of subjects including languages, art, literature, household chores, cinema, agriculture, math sciences and more.
It nurtured our love for music and revealed Unni’s passion for cinematography and editing.
Later we searched for a place to share our music and thoughts on the direction of the world and the way it was affecting us.
This is when we found Youtube.
Slowly, we began sharing deeper into our lives and documenting the life within our family.
We began sharing the beauty in the slowness and sacredness of our traditions as a hope to keep them alive.
We shared about cooking, agriculture, poetry, stories and education.
We combined it with our love of music by composing each piece that went alongside the video.
Dakshina is a continuation of the education that we all received as children and the passions that we discovered through it.
Dakshina has been a story of perseverance.
Even when no one was watching, we continued sharing because we do it from love…
And out of that love, this incredible community has grown.
Today, we live on the same land that held Sarang and we continue to nurture the land that has taught us so much.

The warmth and hospitality at the homeschool were incredible. We got to experience sustainable farming, storytelling, and even try hands-on activities. This is a model of education every child should experience
